The line was introduced in May with its first model, developed in collaboration with Netflix. The Roku series has been considered influential on the overall market for digital media players, helping to popularize the concept of low-cost, small form factor set-top boxes designed for over-the-top media consumption.
It was developed in partnership with Netflixto serve as a standalone set-top box for its recently-introduced "Watch Instantly" service. The companies aimed to produce a device with small form factor that could be sold at a low cost, as opposed to larger digital video recorders and video game consoles. The device featured an NXP PNX video decoder supporting both standard and high definition formats up to pHDMI output, and was capable of automatic software updates—including the addition of new "channels" for other video services.
The following month, Roku introduced a new feature known as the "Channel Store", where users would be able to download third-party apps for other content services including the possibility of private services for specific uses. Netflix support was initially dependent on a PC, requiring users to add content to their "Instant Queue" from the service's web interface before it could be accessed via the Roku.

You'll need to upgrade soon. You should get an alert if you're affected, but Cord Cutters News added that a simple feature check will do before then. If your Netflix app can't auto-play the next episode in a series, you'll have to move on.
This wasn't surprising when Roku itself warned in that it would stop updating players made in May or earlier. These are vintage boxes that stopped receiving new material a long time ago. There's a good chance you've moved on since, for that matter.
This could, however, leave some viewers in the lurch. Roku has long since stopped selling players with composite and component inputs, so you're out of luck if you want to watch Netflix on an old TV that doesn't have HDMI. You might not have much choice but to upgrade your set and player in one fell swoop.

Netflix was once a company focused on competing with the likes of video rental chains with a disc-in-the-mail movie service. With some of the large video store chains bankrupt, Netflix announced that they have officially become a streaming company, and it is estimated that Netflix accounts for as much as twenty percent of all downstream internet traffic during peak hours here in the United States. However, there is far more content on the web than what Netflix offers.
With the rise of Hulu and other video sites, more and more content becomes available online and it can be consumed for far less—if not completely free—than what is offered by cable and satellite companies. What's more, the user has complete control over what is on. There is one problem with this new glut of content: getting all of it into the living room without having to browse countless webpages.
That was the key to the success of a PC application called Boxee, which compiled many of the different internet streaming media sources into one application with a reasonably easy to use UI. The only real hang-up was the PC itself required for such applications.
Boxee chose to partner with D-link in the creation of the stand-alone Boxee Box that should be available any time now. The personal computing titans have given us their own takes, Apple with the Apple TV while Microsoft elected to build those features into its Xbox console.
And what of Netgear? They have teamed with Roku, a company that produced media streaming boxes once only available over the internet, but now they're showing up at Best Buy, Fry's, etc. Today we'll look at the Roku XD, which is the middle tier of the three Roku offerings. Below is a list of the different boxes and their features, straight off the Roku website.
